What we collect and why. When you write to us by the contact form, by email, by telephone or by WhatsApp, we process the identity and contact details you give, the vessel and matter details you describe, and the correspondence itself. We process them to reply to your enquiry, to run the conflict check, to make a fee proposal and, if you instruct us, to act for you; and to meet our obligations as lawyers under the Attorneys' Act and to the Bar. The legal bases are that the processing is necessary for the conclusion or performance of a contract with you, for compliance with our legal obligations, and for our legitimate interest in answering enquiries and keeping a record of them (Law No. 6698 art. 5).
Who receives it. The lawyers and staff of the practice; correspondent counsel we instruct for you at a port outside Istanbul, to the extent needed for the instruction; courts, enforcement offices, harbour masters and other authorities where the instruction requires; and the providers that host this website and our email. Messages sent through the website may be transmitted through servers outside Türkiye; where that amounts to a transfer abroad, it rests on art. 9 of the Law as necessary for the pre-contractual steps you request, and we ask you to send sensitive documents by the means we agree with you rather than through the form.
How long. Enquiries that do not lead to an instruction are kept for as long as the conflict-check record requires and then deleted; files of clients are kept for the periods the Attorneys' Act and the tax laws require.
Your rights. You may apply to us to learn whether your personal data are processed, to request information about the processing, to learn its purpose and whether the data are used accordingly, to know the third parties to whom they are transferred in Türkiye or abroad, to have incomplete or inaccurate data corrected, to request deletion or destruction under the conditions of art. 7, to have those steps notified to the recipients, to object to a result produced exclusively by automated analysis, and to claim compensation for damage caused by unlawful processing (Law No. 6698 art. 11). Applications are made in writing to the address above or by email to info@turkishmaritimelawyer.com.
